A historic merger is a fact in the UK, between co-op societies with more than 160-year-history!
Central Co-op, Midcounties Co-operative and Chelmsford Star Co-operative have merged and the result is the official launch of OurCoop, the new co-operative society formed through the merger of . This historic development marks a significant moment for the UK’s consumer co-operative sector, strengthening co-operative impact and resilience across communities.
OurCoop unites over one million members and around 13,000 colleagues operating across more than 500 food stores and diversified co-operative businesses, including travel, funeralcare, early years, and utilities. Rooted in shared co-operative values, this new society aims to deliver greater value for members and deeper community engagement across the UK.
Euro Coop is particularly proud that Debbie Robinson, CEO of Central Co-op and Vice-President of Euro Coop, has played a central role in this transition, demonstrating leadership grounded in co-operative principles and commitment to member-owned business models. Her involvement reflects the broader collaboration within the European co-operative family to promote democratic ownership and sustainable community impact.
The launch of OurCoop exemplifies how consumer co-operatives can evolve and grow through strategic collaboration while remaining firmly rooted in member engagement and democratic governance. As part of the wider co-operative movement, Euro Coop looks forward to witnessing the society’s progress and the positive contributions it will make for members and communities across the UK and beyond.
